About the Alaskan Shepherd
The Alaskan Shepherd is a designer crossbreed combining the Alaskan Malamute with the German Shepherd. This powerful hybrid inherits the work ethic and intelligence of both parent breeds, resulting in a large, athletic dog that excels at various tasks and activities.
These dogs typically have a wolf-like appearance with a strong, muscular build and a thick double coat that can come in various colors including black and tan, gray, sable, or combinations with white markings. They often have the striking facial mask of the Malamute combined with the alert, intelligent expression of the German Shepherd.
Alaskan Shepherds are highly intelligent and trainable but require an experienced owner who can provide firm, consistent leadership. They have high energy levels and need extensive daily exercise — at least 60-90 minutes of vigorous activity. Without adequate physical and mental stimulation, they can become destructive or develop behavioral problems. They excel in activities like hiking, running, obedience, and protection work.
These dogs are loyal and protective of their families, making them excellent watchdogs. They can be reserved with strangers and require early socialization to prevent excessive wariness. Their thick coat sheds heavily year-round with intense seasonal blowouts. Best suited for active families with large, securely fenced yards and previous large breed experience.
