About the Australian Shepherd
Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the American West to herd livestock. Aussies are highly intelligent, versatile working dogs with seemingly boundless energy and strong herding instincts. They excel in dog sports, search and rescue, and as service dogs. Australian Shepherds are loyal, affectionate family dogs but need jobs to do and extensive daily exercise. Without proper outlets for their energy and intelligence, they become bored and destructive. They're eager to please and highly trainable but can be sensitive. Aussies may try to herd children, other pets, or even cars. Their medium-length double coat requires regular brushing. They're best suited to active families who can provide the physical and mental stimulation these dynamic dogs require.
