About the Belgian Sheepdog

The Belgian Sheepdog, also known as the Groenendael, is one of four Belgian herding breeds distinguished by their elegant, long black coat. These versatile working dogs combine intelligence, trainability, and devotion with a more moderate temperament than the Belgian Malinois, making them excellent companions for active, experienced owners.
Belgian Sheepdogs have a square, elegant build covered in a long, straight black coat that forms a ruff around the neck and feathering on the legs and tail. Their alert, triangular ears and expressive dark eyes give them an intelligent, attentive appearance. They move with effortless grace and purpose.
These dogs are highly intelligent and eager to work, requiring substantial daily exercise — 60-90 minutes — and mental stimulation. They excel at herding, obedience, agility, and tracking. Belgian Sheepdogs are devoted to their families and can be sensitive, forming deep bonds with their owners. They're naturally reserved with strangers and make excellent watchdogs. They need consistent, positive training and thorough socialization from puppyhood.
Their long coat requires regular brushing, especially during seasonal shedding periods. Belgian Sheepdogs are active and need space to move; they're not suited for apartment living. They can be vocal and may exhibit herding behaviors like circling and nipping. Best suited for active families or individuals with herding breed experience who want an elegant, intelligent companion for dog sports and outdoor activities.
