About the Border Collie
The Border Collie is widely considered the most intelligent dog breed, developed on the Scottish-English border for herding sheep. These medium-sized dogs have extraordinary intelligence, intense focus, and seemingly unlimited energy. Border Collies excel at dog sports, herding trials, and any activity requiring agility and obedience. They're workaholics that need a job and extensive daily exercise—both physical and mental. Without adequate stimulation, they become destructive and develop neurotic behaviors. Border Collies are responsive to training but can be too intense for novice owners. They may attempt to herd children, pets, or vehicles using their distinctive stalking and staring behavior. Their medium-length coat requires regular brushing. Border Collies are best suited to very active families or working situations where their intelligence and drive can be properly channeled.
