Puppies of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever breed. Whelped on November 8. Males and females are both present. Deadgrass colors are dark brown and pale brown. AKC sire and dam. OFA. About the Chesapeake Bay Retriever
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a powerful, medium to large sporting breed developed along Maryland's Chesapeake Bay to hunt waterfowl under the most challenging conditions. This peerless duck dog embodies the classic traits of a good retriever: loyal, upbeat, affectionate, and tireless. The Chessie is famous for his waterproof coat, which features a thick, oily, double coat that is both insulating and waterproof, repelling moisture much the way a duck's feathers do. Tireless workers, dogs of this breed have retrieved up to 300 ducks from the bay in a single day.
The quintessential Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a bright and happy disposition, intelligence, quiet good sense, and an affectionate protective nature. They make adventurous and loyal companions, are playful and generally good with children, and eager to please. However, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are not as gregarious as most other retriever breeds, and they are the most protective of all the retrievers, and the most headstrong. This breed is known for its strong-willed nature and can pose a challenge for novice dog owners.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an intelligent breed and learns at a high speed, though they respond best to positive, consistent training methods. This purely American breed was developed to hunt waterfowl under punishing weather conditions, and has been known to stoically break through icy waters without concern during the course of multiple retrieves. The Chessie thrives in active homes with experienced owners who can provide ample exercise, mental stimulation, and appreciate their distinctive working heritage.
