About the Fox Terrier

The Fox Terrier, which includes both Smooth and Wire varieties, is a classic British terrier breed developed specifically for fox hunting. These brave, energetic dogs were bred to go to ground—meaning they would pursue foxes into their dens and either bolt them out or hold them at bay until hunters could dig them out. This heritage has created a breed that is fearless, energetic, and always ready for action. While the Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers are now recognized as separate breeds, they share the same spirited temperament and working heritage. Fox Terriers are small but sturdy dogs, standing 13 to 16 inches tall and weighing between 15 and 19 pounds. They are mostly white with black, tan, or black and tan markings, a coloration that made them easily visible to hunters in the field. The Smooth Fox Terrier has a short, dense, flat coat that lies close to the body, while the Wire Fox Terrier sports a dense, wiry coat with a soft undercoat. Both varieties possess a keen, intelligent expression and a confident, athletic build designed for agility and endurance. The Fox Terrier personality is quintessentially terrier—bold, confident, and always alert. These are dogs with big personalities packed into compact bodies. They are friendly and outgoing with their families, often forming particularly strong bonds with their owners. However, they can be independent and strong-willed, traits that were necessary for their original work but can present training challenges. They are natural comedians who love to entertain and be the center of attention. Fox Terriers are highly intelligent and capable of learning quickly, but their independent nature means they may not always choose to obey, especially if they find something more interesting to investigate. Training requires consistency, patience, and a sense of humor. Positive reinforcement methods work best, as these sensitive dogs don't respond well to harsh corrections.
