About the Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso is an ancient small breed originating from the monasteries and palaces of Tibet, where they served as interior sentinel dogs for over 2,000 years. Named after the sacred city of Lhasa, these dogs were highly valued by Tibetan monks and nobility, believed to bring good luck and serve as guardians. Their regal bearing and aristocratic demeanor reflect their esteemed history as cherished companions of Buddhist monks and Tibetan royalty.
Characterized by their distinctive floor-length coat that flows elegantly as they move, Lhasa Apsos possess a beautiful double coat that comes in various colors including gold, cream, honey, slate, and multi-color combinations. Their long, flowing hair requires significant grooming commitment—daily brushing is essential to prevent matting and tangling. Many pet owners opt for a shorter puppy cut for easier maintenance. Despite their luxurious coat, they are minimal shedders, making them suitable for people concerned about pet hair.
