About the Mountain Feist
The Mountain Feist is a small to medium-sized American hunting dog with roots dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Developed in the Southern United States, particularly in mountain regions, these agile dogs were bred by settlers to hunt squirrels and other small game. The term 'feist' comes from 'fice' or 'fyce,' an old term for small hunting dogs.
Compact and athletic, Mountain Feists have short, smooth coats in various colors including white, black, tan, brindle, and combinations thereof. They are incredibly energetic, intelligent, and possess exceptional treeing abilities. These dogs have powerful prey drives and are known for their intense focus when hunting. Despite their hunting prowess, they are generally friendly and affectionate with family members, making them dual-purpose dogs.
Mountain Feists require significant daily exercise and mental stimulation. They excel at hunting, agility, and other dog sports that challenge their minds and bodies. Without proper outlets, they can become destructive or develop behavioral issues. These dogs are vocal and will alert their owners to anything unusual.
