About the Norwich Terrier

The Norwich Terrier is a small, spirited terrier breed that originated in England in the 19th century, specifically around Norwich and Cambridge. These plucky little dogs were bred to hunt rats and other vermin, as well as to bolt foxes from their dens during hunts. Until 1964, Norwich and Norfolk Terriers were considered one breed; they were separated based on ear carriage, with Norwich Terriers having distinctive pricked (erect) ears.

Despite being one of the smallest working terriers, Norwich Terriers possess enormous courage and energy. They have hard, wiry, weather-resistant coats in red, wheaten, black and tan, or grizzle. These confident little dogs are alert, fearless, and make excellent watchdogs. What sets them apart from many terriers is their relatively sociable nature—they generally get along well with other dogs and are less prone to dog aggression when properly socialized.

Norwich Terriers adapt well to various living situations, including apartments, as long as they receive adequate daily exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy walks, play, and activities that engage their intelligent minds. Their wiry coats need regular brushing and periodic hand-stripping to maintain texture and appearance. These dogs retain strong prey drives and will chase small animals. While intelligent, they can display typical terrier stubbornness during training, requiring patience and consistency. Norwich Terriers make wonderful companions for active individuals or families who want a portable dog with a big personality, combining affection, loyalty, and fearless spirit in a compact, manageable package.
