About the Old English Sheepdog
The Old English Sheepdog, affectionately known as the 'OES' or 'Bobtail,' is a large herding breed that originated in England in the early 19th century. Despite their name, they're not particularly ancient and were developed to drive sheep and cattle to market. Their distinctive shaggy, waterproof double coat protected them during long drives in harsh English weather. Many were traditionally born with naturally bobbed tails or had them docked, earning the 'Bobtail' nickname.
These large, athletic dogs are covered in profuse, shaggy gray and white fur that often covers their eyes, giving them a lovable, teddy bear-like appearance. Despite their imposing size, Old English Sheepdogs are gentle, intelligent, and even-tempered. They're known for their distinctive loud, ringing bark and characteristic 'bear-like' shuffling gait. These dogs are playful well into adulthood and form strong bonds with their families, often trying to herd children and other pets.
Old English Sheepdogs require significant grooming commitment—their coat needs brushing several times weekly to prevent matting, and professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Many owners keep them in shorter 'puppy cuts' for easier maintenance. They need moderate daily exercise but aren't hyperactive. Their herding instinct means they may try to herd family members by bumping or nudging. These dogs thrive on companionship and don't do well left alone for long periods. Best suited for families with time for grooming and who want a gentle, playful, devoted companion with a distinctive appearance.
