About the Plott

The Plott is a unique American breed and the official state dog of North Carolina, developed by the Plott family in the mid-1700s for hunting large game including bear and wild boar in the Appalachian Mountains. Named after Johannes Plott, a German immigrant who brought the breed's ancestors to America, the Plott is the only coonhound breed not descended from foxhounds. These medium to large dogs are characterized by their distinctive brindle coat (though other colors exist), muscular build, and exceptional hunting abilities. Plotts are renowned for their courage, stamina, and powerful tracking abilities, with a voice that can carry for miles. While primarily bred as hunting dogs, they make devoted family companions when their needs are met. Plotts are intelligent and independent, traits that served them well in hunting but can make training challenging. They respond best to patient, consistent training with positive reinforcement, though their strong prey drive and determination require an experienced handler. These dogs form deep bonds with their families and are typically loyal and affectionate at home, though they can be reserved with strangers. They're generally good with children when properly socialized, though their high energy means supervision is important. Plotts require substantial daily exercise—at least 60 minutes of vigorous activity including running, hiking, or engaging in scent work. Without adequate physical and mental stimulation, they can become bored and potentially destructive. Their short, smooth coat is low-maintenance, requiring only weekly brushing. However, their long, droopy ears need regular cleaning to prevent infections. Plotts are generally healthy with few breed-specific issues, though hip dysplasia and bloat can occur. They have a strong prey drive and should be kept in securely fenced areas, as they may chase small animals. Their loud, baying voice can be problematic in suburban settings. Plotts are best suited for active families in rural or suburban areas with secure outdoor spaces, preferably those interested in hunting or outdoor activities. With proper exercise, training, and socialization, they become devoted, courageous companions.
