About the Schipperke

The Schipperke is a small Belgian breed, often called the Little Captain, originally bred to guard canal boats and hunt vermin. These compact dogs pack enormous personality into their small frames, combining confidence, curiosity, and independence. Schipperkes are intensely alert watchdogs who take their guardian duties seriously, barking to announce anything unusual. They're loyal to their families but can be reserved with strangers, requiring early socialization. Despite their small size, they're fearless and may challenge larger dogs without hesitation. These intelligent, active dogs need daily exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom. They excel at dog sports like agility where they can showcase their athleticism and problem-solving abilities. Schipperkes are independent thinkers with a mischievous streak, making training a challenge that requires patience, consistency, and humor. They're escape artists who will investigate any opening in fences or doors. Their distinctive fox-like appearance features a double coat that sheds heavily twice yearly but requires only weekly brushing otherwise. Schipperkes are generally healthy and long-lived. They're suited for experienced owners who appreciate their spirited nature and can provide firm, consistent leadership. These dogs are devoted family members who remain playful and alert throughout their lives, making them entertaining companions for those who understand their independent character.
